PEDESTRIANISING CANTERBURY: SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED?

17th February 2005

Dr Geoff Meaden, Green Party Candidate for Canterbury, is supporting the experiment in pedestrianisation around the Westgate Towers on Sundays. However, he feels that this is a very modest proposal and wants a more radical expansion of Canterbury's pedestrianised areas. He comments: "My campaigning against large-scale fringe of City developments like the proposed Barton Business Park and the defeated proposal for a Canterbury College campus south of Canterbury have always been guided by the need to reduce traffic in the City. Canterbury City Council should be considering a much larger pedestrianised area, preserving access for residents, deliveries and the emergency services.

"As a city with a large daily influx of commuters, shoppers and students, we need the City Council to develop long-term plans to either pedestrianise or to minimise access to the central parts of the City. These should include full pedestrianisation of St.Peters Place and Northgate, and an examination of other urban centre streets to seek traffic reductions.

"Failure to take such radical measures will lead to more gridlock, making Canterbury a very unattractive place to visit, work or study in."
