AFTER KYOTO - KENT GREENS RECOMMEND ACTION BY INDIVIDUALS TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE

17th February 2005

The Kyoto Protocol has come into force. Over 140 states are now committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, these states do not include the USA, China or India. Kent Green Party is offering a list of actions individuals can take to help cut greenhouse gas emissions. Steve Dawe comments: "We recommend Kent residents take the following actions to reduce the County's greenhouse gas emissions:
  • Upgrade home insulation
  • Consider obtaining solar water heating, solar panels and mini wind turbines for homes and businesses
  • Reduce car journeys by walking, cycling and using public transport more
  • Write to MPs demanding they support Early Day Motion 538 supporting a Contraction and Convergence policy towards global greenhouse gas emissions (1). At the same time, MPs should be reminded that averting climate change will require a cut of 85% in greenhouse gas emissions by the UK, by 2050.
  • Residents, employers and employees should encourage best practice in re-use and recycling where they live and work, to cut energy wastage
  • All electricity users should switch to companies committed to supplying and investing in renewable energy(2)
  • All electricity users should switch appropriate appliances off when not in use, as this wastes energy and costs all electricity consumers about £40 billion each year."
