CANTERBURY'S FUTURE: A CITY OF STUDENTS?

10th February 2005

Dr Geoff Meaden, Green Party Candidate for Canterbury, has welcomed the proposed study into the impact of students upon the City (1). He says:

"The number of full- and part-time students attending Further and Higher Education in Canterbury is now above 30,000. Each year, the figures increase. Canterbury District Green Party recognises the huge benefit of a large student community in supporting local businesses and bringing income to our district. But there is reason for concern about how students drive up housing costs by taking up a lot of local housing. There must also be concern about the state of rental properties, litter nuisance, traffic impacts and noise problems in some areas of Canterbury.

"I am committed personally and professionally to the expansion of education opportunities. I have devoted my working life to this end. But concentrating significant education expansion in Canterbury is inevitably having some negative effects upon parts of the City. I hope the investigation into the overall impacts of students will conclude that Further and Higher Education institutions based in Canterbury should be pressed to expand in locations outside Canterbury district. The Green Party would like to see better access to post-16 education throughout Kent in future - not expansion heavily concentrated in Canterbury."
