CUT YOUR AIR TRAVEL! - GREENS CALL FOR CUTS IN AIR TRAVEL TO MARK WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY SUNDAY 5TH JUNE27 May 2005Kent Greens are calling for people to cut their air travel to mark World Environment Day on Sunday 5th June. Dr Hazel Dawe, Campaigns Officer of Kent Green Party, comments: "One of the easiest cuts in greenhouse gas emissions people can make is to cut their air flights. Aviation emissions are increasing by about 6% a year in Europe and there is still no tax on aviation fuel, unlike fuel taxes applied to petrol and diesel for cars and other vehicles. Given disturbing evidence that global warming is speeding up (1), there is a need for a managed reduction in air travel. This will prevent airport expansion in various locations in Kent, such as Manston and Lydd, and should help to reduce over-flight of Kent from Heathrow and Gatwick. Airline operators will respond to increased ticket prices, as they have with rising fuel prices recently, by making sure aircraft are full of passengers. "Clearly, there will be benefits in reducing noise pollution from airports and aircraft, if a rigorous policy is followed. Kent Green Party sees international rail service operators benefiting significantly from aviation paying for its pollution. In short, if employment in airports continues to decline in most locations, employment in rail services may well increase in consequence for journeys to Europe."
