LET'S ALL MAKE POVERTY HISTORY

22 May 2005

Dr Geoff Meaden, on behalf of Canterbury District Green Party, is urging support for the Making Poverty History demonstration and festival on Saturday 28th May. The event begins with a demonstration at 12.00 noon marching from the Westgate Gardens to the Dane John where there will be stalls, music and speeches. Geoff Meaden comments:

"This event is important to all sections of the community and to people of a wide variety of political persuasions. We all recognise that our global economic system has winners and losers at the present time. Fair trade, ending debt for poor countries and stopping arms exports to dictatorships will all help to improve the fortunes of the poorest peoples in the world. But we should recognise the gap between rich and poor in our own society as well:

  • Homelessness has increased significantly in recent years with rising house prices and rents.
  • 900 people die of the cold, on average, each year in Kent and 30,000 in the UK.
  • Poor students in Canterbury are, in some cases, living in unheated homes throughout the winter.
  • The UK minimum wage is not linked to inflation, so its value is decreasing all the time.
  • Pensions do not protect the elderly from rising council tax and utility bills, meaning many people face serious problems in paying their bills as they get older.
  • Our various types of taxes take far more money from the incomes of low and middle income household than from the highest paid.
We should Make Poverty History through increasing Overseas Aid. But we should also address rising poverty in Britain too.
