GOOD NEWS ON THANET'S FUTURE ENERGY NEEDS22 May 2005Howard Green, on behalf of Thanet Green Party, has welcomed proposals for a substantial wind farm off Margate. This project is expected to have a total capacity of up to 300 MW which will supply approximately 240,000 homes per year with their electricity needs. Howard Green comments: "This proposal for up to 80 turbines about 13 km offshore will meet the electricity needs of Thanet and a significant area of East Kent(1). The project will consequently make a significant contribution to the Government's national and regional renewable energy targets. Turbines can be built offshore and onshore far more quickly than onshore power station construction(2). "If this effort is accompanied by energy conservation for homes and installing renewable energy on houses and businesses, we can actually cut energy demand in this country by 40-50% (3). This would mean employment in every locality improving and introducing insulation, solar water heating, solar panels and the new mini wind turbines. "The Green Party believes safe energy and energy conservation can not only help to meet our energy needs, they can also significantly cut the UK's greenhouse gas emissions." The Little Cheyne Court wind farm planned for Romney Marsh will supply 75% of the needs of the Shepway District Council area. The Kentish Flats windfarm off Whitstable is currently under construction and new plans are emerging for a wind farm off Ramsgate and one off Graveney, near Faversham. 2. Little Cheyne Court wind farm should take 18 months to build and will 'pay back' the carbon dioxide used in its construction (transport, concrete manufacture etc) within 3-6 months, in terms of its contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from power stations using fossil fuels.
