GREENS ENCOURAGE KENT RESIDENTS TO WRITE TO MPs ON ENERGY POLICIESKent Green Party has written to all of Kent's MPs making a case for energy conservation and renewable energy and against new nuclear power stations. The Party wants Kent residents to write to their MPs challenging the idea of new nuclear power stations, which the Government is currently considering. Steve Dawe comments: "Employment in energy conservation, and in the installation of renewable energy for homes and businesses, could offer new jobs in every district in Kent. Recent American research suggests that spending on energy conservation is also seven times more effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions than spending money on nuclear power. "Kent Green Party strongly supports the onshore Wind Farm proposed for Romney Marsh. We also support proposals for wind farms offshore near Graveney, Whitstable, Margate and Ramsgate. Wind farms do not need fuel nor do they generate radioactive waste needing storage for up to 250,000 years. The main case we have stressed to Kent's MPs is that nuclear power requires massive state subsidies to run and state resources to meet its liabilities, unlike renewable energy. There is, put simply, no economic case for nuclear power. Neither the UK nor the USA have commissioned a new nuclear power station for over 20 years, and there is no need to start now. As the Association for the Conservation of Energy has argued, cuts in energy use of 40-50% are possible. Energy conservation and renewable energy sources can meet all of our conceivable energy needs for the future, more cheaply and more safely than nuclear power(1).
