DISTRICT HITS 30% RECYCLING - GREENS CONGRATULATE COUNCIL AND PUBLIC

20th January 2005

Dr Geoff Meaden, Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for Canterbury, has congratulated the City Council and the public concerning the new high rate of recycling achieved in the district. The Canterbury City Council area, incorporating Herne Bay, Whitstable and surrounding villages, has reached a 30% recycling rate(1). Dr Meaden comments:

"The new recycling figures show a formidable commitment by the public. The effort by households supports local recycling jobs. The City Council is to be congratulated for its policy performance. The Green Party supports the move to fortnightly rubbish collection which will lead to even higher rates of recycling and re-use. Fortnightly recycling collections halve the energy used, and greenhouses gasses created, in waste collection.

"The example of Wye, near Ashford, which already has a fortnightly collection and exceptional recycling facilities, shows that up to 70% recycling can be achieved. What is also interesting and inspiring about Wye is that fortnightly collection has led to more re-use, with more second-hand goods being made available in the community. This suggests people may be able to avoid the trap of debt if on low or fixed incomes particularly important to those who have retired (2)."
