GREEN PARTY COMMENDED FOR 'JOINED-UP' APPROACH TO DEVELOPMENT

2nd May 2005

The Green Party has received a commendation from the Royal Town Planning Institute for its efforts to get policy makers to connect transport, planning and the environment. The Institute noted: "With the exception of the Greens, there is still a failure to connect planning, transport and the environment and to provide a joined-up approach to infrastructure.(1)" Steve Dawe notes:

"This support for our approach is not surprising. Leading Architect, Lord Richard Rogers, gave his support to the re-election of South East Green MEP, Caroline Lucas, last year. Having chaired the Government's Urban Task Force which produced an Urban White Paper, he was clearly very disappointed by the decline in commitment to urban regeneration which had occurred during the Labour Government since 1997(2). Labour has also backed away from the greener commitments suggested in its Ten Year Transport plan, reverting to road-building as a major priority.

"A vote for Green Candidates in the County and General Elections is a vote for a sane approach to development. Brownfield sites in urban areas must be used before any greenfield site development is considered."
