Maidstone Green Party call for sustainable development

18 April 2005

The Maidstone Green Party have called for action over the rapid housing growth across the County which is now spreading to Maidstone. They say that the developments in Ashford and the Thames Gateway will cause untold damage to the environment, increasing pollution and causing water and power shortages across Kent. The proposed development of green field sites around Maidstone will make these problems worse.

The Green‘s have called for all the political parties to unite behind them in the call to find real alternatives to the unsustainable growth that Kent is undergoing.

Stuart Jeffery said "We cannot allow the destruction of our green field sites and the devastation that unsustainable development brings when almost a hundred thousand properties lie unoccupied in the south east."

The Party wants 'regeneration' to be about revitalizing existing communities rather than building new ones and feels that other areas in the country are missing out on opportunities because of the government's focus on the south east.
