Maidstone Green Party call for action on climate change

23 April 2005

In February this year, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, gave a strong endorsement of green politics which was backed up this week by the Bishop of London. Climate change is the greatest threat that we face, yet is has hardly featured in the political debates of the past few weeks. The actions needed to combat climate change are clear, but the major political parties seem uninterested with it.

Our borough council has issues a plan to become a carbon neutral council, which is excellent news, yet the Major is still being driven around in a large polluting Jaguar; it will be interesting to see if this changes. Let us hope that the council deliver on their carbon neutral plan, leading us all by example.

The Maidstone Green Party have called for KCC to adopt the same plan. Penny Kemp, former Chair of the Green Party and Green Party Environment Speaker as well as political advisor to the National Executive said, "Even Kofi Anan and David King, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government recognise that climate change is a more serious threat than global terrorism. Yet the only response we get from politicians is more greenwash, more papers, more rhetoric but no real action. Action has to be taken on every level and we are especially vulnerable in the South East."

The Green Party are standing 7 candidates across Maidstone in the County Elections; they can be contacted on 01622 676984.
