WHAT ABOUT THE ISSUES THAT REALLY MATTER? (Thanet)14th April 2005The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has issued a pre-election letter(1), urging party leaders to avoid political campaigns based on fear. Dr Williams has argued that although negative campaign strategies may make headlines they do not determine the outcome of elections and that politicians should discipline themselves to offer long-term solutions. Dr. Williams identifies four such issues: the environment, international development and the arms trade, youth and family policy, and criminal justice reform. Howard Green, Green Party Candidate for South Thanet, comments: "Of these issues, only the last one appears to be featuring strongly in the Election campaign to date. Thanet is experiencing a clear decline in its environment through greenfield site development of new retail businesses which threaten existing town centres. Airport expansion will add noise and air pollution if successful, but more likely we will see the hopes of airline operators dashed once again as they have been repeatedly over the last 15 years. We need to build upon the small, independent businesses Thanet still has. These offer diversity and generate more employment than larger enterprises(2). They are also unlikely to have the greenfield site demands of larger companies." "As Green Party Candidate for South Thanet, I will be raising these issues during this election. But pressing all candidates on these issues is a job for voters too." Ends c228 words FURTHER INFORMATION: Howard Green - Green Party Candidate for South Thanet, 01843 601250 (callminder). Notes: 1. Research done by the New Economics Foundation shows that small enterprises need about £350,000 of extra turnover to generate a new job whilst large enterprises need about £3250,000 of turnover | ||||||
