GREENS PRESENT COUNTY COUNCIL CANDIDATES7th April 2005Shepway Green Party has selected two candidates for the County Elections to be held on Thursday 5th May. Nicola Gregory will be standing in Folkestone West and Peter Scarth in Folkestone South. Nicky Gregory is a mature student at the University of Kent with two daughters at the Folkestone School for Girls. Nicky believes that many of the problems facing Folkestone are due to the loss of community facilities such as Youth clubs, centres for the elderly and live music venues. In Folkestone, anti-social behaviour is contributed to by a lack of free or affordable activities for young people. Nicky believes that small businesses and local farmers need support to ensure they are able to trade despite intense competition from the supermarkets. Nicky supports the Green Party's opposition to genetically modified foods being grown in Kent. Peter Scarth is a Bookkeeper. Peter is a school governor of the George Spurgen Community Primary School in Folkestone. He supports Green Party opposition to SATS and league tables believing there is too much testing. Peter believes new housing development should not encroach further onto irreplaceable green fields and should include at least 50% social housing. Energy saving measures, including energy conservation through better insulation, should be prioritised, saving householders money and reducing carbon emissions. New housing must be supported by appropriate infrastructure, including the retention of local hospital facilities. As an elected councillor, Peter will campaign for energy efficient public transport that will help reduce congestion. Both candidates are part of parliamentary candidate Dr Hazel Dawe's campaign team. The Kent Green Party Manifesto can be found on the front page at www.kentgreenparty.org.uk and documents on Shepway in the Kent section. Free copies of the Manifesto can be requested by ringing 01233 645167. Ends C260 WORDS FURTHER INFORMATION: Councillor Wendy Harris, 01303 266172. Contact address as above. | ||||||
