GREENS SELECT CANDIDATE FOR FOLKESTONE AND HYTHE3rd March 2005Shepway Green Party has selected Dr Hazel Dawe as Green Party Candidate for Folkestone and Hythe. Dr Dawe is one of Kent's most experienced Green Party candidates. She has stood in local, general and European Elections. Dr Dawe is a Senior Lecturer in Law, teaching both Contract and European Law. She has, as Kent Green Party's Campaigns Officer, participated in supporting the proposed Wind Farm on Romney Marsh, and has pressed for alternative employment in Shepway anticipating the closure of the Dungeness nuclear power stations. She campaigned to resist the highly damaging proposals to build a holiday village in Lyminge Forest and will fiercely protect Shepway's green spaces. She has joined the call to prevent reductions in Shepway's hospital services and will oppose attempts to expand Lydd Airport. Dr Dawe, 51, has two children both currently studying at the Kent Institute of Art and Design. She is married to Kent Green Party Press Officer, Steve Dawe. She lived in Austria for 17 years. She is fluent in German and French with experience in banking up to a very senior level. Dr Dawe says: "The general election must address what the Government's chief scientist has described as a far worst threat to us than terrorism climate change. Energy efficiency and safe energy technologies, better public transport and organic agriculture all offer employment and help combat climate change. Concerning other issues in this election, the Green Party supports a scaled-down European Union without controls over agriculture or fisheries, and without the Euro or a European Constitution(1). We want a redistribution of our tax revenues from defence and from quangos to local government and public services. Like Kent Green Party, I strongly support developing a Common Asylum Policy for the European Union that guarantees that movement of people between countries is legal, fair and safe. I condemn all political parties which use asylum seekers as a political 'football' for political advantage including the two largest parties."
