A GOOD GREEN XMAS KEEPING YOUR DEBTS DOWN

2nd December 2004

Christmas is the time of year when waste is greatest and when household debt rises. Kent Green Party believes that we can all have a good Christmas and keep waste and debt down. Dr Hazel Dawe, Campaigns Officer, comments:

"Our recycling services struggle to cope with the after-Christmas deluge of packaging. This is quickly followed by the now-traditional January sales wave of spending and yet more packaging. We also should all be concerned that personal debt in the UK is over £1 trillion, 80% of this being mortgages. If we want to recycle and re-use more, and keep our debts under control, households need to change their approach to Christmas. What can be done?"

* Decorations can be made at home. Wrapping paper can be reduced to a minimum. Second-hand goods, and transfers of goods as presents between people in the same household, can help to keep costs down while maintaining a variety of gifts.
* Avoid traffic jams and crowded areas by buying in your local shops and shopping on the internet for bargains.
* Get a reusable tree, or grow one in your garden for use each year.
* Use old Christmas cards, dried berries, holly and other clippings from your garden which can all make good decorations.
* Be careful to buy food which will store, to make your money go further.
* Do not buy presents for people unless you are sure they are wanted.
