GREENS WELCOME FOX HUNTING BAN

19th November 2004

Kent Greens have welcomed the ban on Fox Hunting just introduced by Parliament. Greens see this as a step towards reducing cruelty and animals, and a step towards a less violent society. Steve Dawe comments:

"At last Parliament has reflected public opinion by voting to ban fox hunting. At least three quarters of people have wanted hunting banned for years, and finally Parliament has caught up. Kent Green Party hopes this will lead to the Countryside Alliance and others who have supported hunting directing their efforts towards the real needs of rural Kent: more housing that local residents can afford; support for rural businesses, for example by forming co-operatives between similar shops to allow to increase their bulk purchasing; a campaign to increase rural public transport spending to the average European level: twice what we have in Kent; more organic agriculture and more farmers' markets.

"Kent Green Party sees fox hunting as just one aspect of cruelty to animals. We also see cruelty to animals as just one part of violence in our society. Any reductions in violence towards animals or people is to be welcomed in a society where acts of violence against people are actually increasing: domestic violence and racist attacks are examples.
