GREENS CLAIM GOOD RESULT IN BARTON BY-ELECTION8th October 2004Keith Bothwell, Green Party candidate for the Barton ward by-election for the City Council, is upbeat about the Green Party result in the by-election. He comments: "Increasing our vote share and beating Labour were real achievements for the Green Party in the Barton Ward by-election. Now, we can hold all the candidates of the other parties to account. They all claimed they were against the Barton Ward Business Park. Their parties had all voted for the Business Park, in City Council meetings. So what is the true policy of these parties? Do they accept that the total opposition of local people to the Business Park means using land on the Thanet Way instead? Or do they think they can ignore public opposition?" Geoff Meaden, Election Agent in the by-election, presented a 100-page submission to the Local Plan Inspector in early October, detailing the inaccuracies being promoted by the Council concerning the alleged need for a Business Park. He comments: "No one in Barton Ward supported the Business Park, during our canvassing efforts. No credible case for the Business Park exists. The Council's regeneration zones certainly do not include Barton Ward or the area immediately south of Canterbury. It is time the Council backed off our landscape and concentrated, for the first time, on using its own brownfield sites." ENDS c226 words FURTHER INFORMATION: Keith Bothwell, 01227 780477.
