BARTON WARD BY-ELECTION: OUTGOING LIB DEM COUNCILLOR SUPPORTS GREENS

2nd September 2004

Carole Brett, a Liberal Democrat councillor who stood down, causing the Barton Ward by-election, has signed the nomination papers of Keith Bothwell, Green Party candidate in the by-election. She has signed the papers as proposer and has indicated that she will be voting Green in future elections. In collecting her signature, Keith Bothwell and his Election Agent Geoff Meaden were astonished both to get her support and at her lack of enthusiasm for the Liberal Democrats.

Geoff Meaden notes:

"Carole Brett, outgoing LibDem Councillor for Barton Ward, has not only acted as Proposer for the nomination of Green Party candidate Keith Bothwell, but also says that in the future I will be voting Green."

He adds:

"Divisions over the Business Park, amongst Liberal Democrats in Shepway - where 12 Lib Dem councillors have been expelled from their Party - and serious conflict over privatization and public services(1) suggest that the Liberal Democrats have considerable problems maintaining coherent policies. Personal and political differences seem to be commonplace amongst them."ENDS c178 words
