GREENS SELECT BARTON WARD CANDIDATE26th August 2004Keith Bothwell, who lives in St.Augustine's Road, Canterbury, has been selected as the Green Party candidate for the Barton ward by-election for the City Council. Keith was a candidate for the ward in the local elections of 2003. Keith is a lecturer in Architecture at the Kent Institute of Art and Design. Keith has a long experience of trying to get Canterbury City Council to improve its policies. As a member of the Local Agenda 21 Transport Group, which produced a comprehensive report on transport in Canterbury, he like other campaigners saw that effort shelved by the Council. Keith Bothwell is married with four children, and has lived in the Barton Ward of Canterbury for over sixteen years. He is an architect in private practice, and is Principal Lecturer at Canterbury School of Architecture, Kent Institute of Art and Design where he specialises in the teaching of environmental technology and sustainable design. Keith has been involved with a number of local voluntary organisations as a Committee member. These include: the local branch of the Children's Society; the Canterbury Environment Centre; the Canterbury Conservation Area Advisory Committee; the Sustainability Committee of Kent Design. Keith comments: "I am standing for Canterbury City Council because I believe far more must be done to reduce traffic levels in the City. The New Dover Road Park and Ride dramatically increased traffic in Barton Ward and now the Council plans a Business Park with serious traffic implications in the same area! None of the other parties have done enough to cut gridlock and congestion in Canterbury. Attempts to develop south of Canterbury, like the previously proposed Canterbury College campus, must be resisted if the landscape character of the City is to be protected. Empty industrial estate land along the Thanet Way could accommodate a business park." ENDS c303 wordsFURTHER INFORMATION: Keith Bothwell, 01227 780477.
