CAROLINE LUCAS MEP RE-ELECTED! Green MEP re-elected with 60,000 more votes

14th June 2004

Green MEP Caroline Lucas, first elected in 1999, has been re-elected in the European Elections of 2004.

Despite a reduction in the number of seats in the South East Region from 11 to 10, Caroline Lucas was re-elected in 9th place ahead of a Liberal Democrat. The Green Party vote expanded from 112,000 in 1999 to over 173,000 in these elections. In Kent, massive increases in votes contributed to the Green Party's success(1). Hazel Dawe, Green Party European Candidate for Kent, notes:

"Kent Greens are delighted that one of the Green Party's most effective performers has been re-elected. In an election of very large changes between parties, it was a massive challenge to prevent other parties attempting to squeeze us out. They failed to do so in the South East Region and in London, re-electing both of our existing members of the European Parliament. Given the large sums spent by other parties compared to our own modest spending, this represents a considerable vote of confidence from the public. People clearly wanted Green voices in the European Parliament, fighting for our interests by promoting organic agriculture, resisting GM crops and improving environment, trade and transport policies. It is clear that Green opposition to the Government's position on Iraq, the Euro and the European Constitution helped add to the Green vote."
