GREENS QUIZ PUBLIC ON ASHFORD EXPANSION

20th May 2004

Hazel Dawe, Green Party European Candidate for Kent, will be asking local people what they think about Ashford's expansion on Saturday 29th May 12.00 noon onwards, near the Bandstand. Public concern raised with Green canvassers during the Ashford South East by-election suggests that no one is satisfied with the present process of expansion. People generally do not believe facilities in Ashford have been maintained or developed over decades. New estates do not bring sufficient community facilities with them. Hazel Dawe comments:

"With the help of members of my campaign team, I am going to be asking residents how they feel about the process of expansion in Ashford. This will lead on to other issues such as difficulties people are experiencing concerning access to doctors, dentists and the generally poor facilities in Ashford for the young and the old.

"The dilemma for Ashford Borough Council and Kent County Council is a lack of funds. Our Government is spending too much of our tax payments at the centre, and not enough in our communities. Ashford is short of facilities of all kinds, with people informing us in recent canvassing of the journeys they make to nearby towns to use businesses and services outside Ashford. We are very glad to see campaigning efforts to get a Theatre, to promote fair trade as a part of a new image for Ashford and efforts to create a multi-purpose Discovery Centre. However, it is clear that whilst many facilities have been proposed for Ashford, few have actually been made a reality. The Green Party is concerned that most of the extra money allocated to Ashford by the Government will go down a hole called Junction 10A of the M20."
