FAVERSHAM WANTS TO VOTE DOWN THE EUROPEAN CONSTITUTION

10th May 2004

European Election campaigning Greens in Faversham

Hazel Dawe, Green Party candidate in the European Elections to be held on the 10th June was asking shoppers in Faversham Town centre their opinion on the proposed European Constitution on Saturday 8th May.

Shoppers answered two questions. The first question was: "Do you think there should be a referendum on the proposed European Constitution?" A third of all those questioned had no opinion. Of those who voiced an opinion, 72% thought there should be a referendum an overwhelming vote in favour.

When asked how they would vote if there was a referendum, again a third of those questioned either did not know or would not vote. Of those who would vote 67% said they would vote against and 33% would vote in favour.

Hazel Dawe says: "This is a clear rejection of the draft European Constitution. A clear majority of those who would vote in a referendum would vote against it. People in this country are not happy at the centralisation of power in the European Union."
