FOLKESTONE: EMPLOYMENT FUTURES3rd May 2004Photo opportunity Green Party Campaigners will be in Folkestone town centre on Friday 14th May from 12.00 noon. Hazel Dawe, Campaigns Officer of the East Kent Green Party, will be asking local people for their views on alternative employment to Dungeness A nuclear station which is closing within the next two years. The Green Party has been promoting several key areas of new employment in East Kent: * Work-live units similar to the Bedzed development at Bedlington, Surrey, which provide self-employed people with energy-efficient homes and workplaces combined, allowing them time for their families and community activities, unlike the experience of many commuters; * Co-operatives, to permit people with small amounts of capital, or similar existing businesses, to have greater security than when operating as sole traders; * Civil service transfers to East Kent; * Safe and renewable energy: such as energy conservation work and new renewable energy facilities both for homes solar water heating and solar panels, as examples and the Wind Farm proposed for Romney Marsh. Hazel Dawe comments: "Each part of East Kent needs to develop active employment strategies as most local job expansion in recent years has been in retail or warehousing, with higher paid jobs being concentrated in only a few places or in London. Greens believe quality of life means having the ability to work near to where you live, allowing people time for family and other voluntary interests. This needs vigorous promotion by local government and the business community to make it a reality for more people." ENDS c255 words FURTHER INFORMATION: Hazel Dawe on 01233 645167 or 07960 956272.
