COUNCIL 'INTENDS DESTRUCTION OF COUNTRYSIDE'

4th May 2004

Canterbury District Green Party condemns the proposals for a Business Park on a 20 hectare greenfield site at New Dover Road. Existing industrial land should be used for this development, argues Geoff Meaden:

"A Canterbury district business park could be sited on the Thanet Way in unused industrial land. There is no reason to use a greenfield site. Given the pressures upon Canterbury to expand, generated by increases in student numbers each year, it is vital that new development makes full use of existing brownfield sites. The Green Party is concerned that development at the southern end of New Dover Road will lead to additional pressures for development in that area, upon land which should be used for agriculture. If a Business Park is sited there, as with other developments upon agricultural land, the supposed gain of jobs will be at the expense of the potential jobs in organic agriculture which could take place upon the same land.

"We note that existing developments of this type are also very low density, meaning few jobs in relation to the land area in use. Whilst considering the untapped potential of vacancies in its industrial estates, the City Council should be pressing for office blocks in appropriate locations along the Thanet Way, not accepting low level structures which effectively 'eat up' brownfield sites. Development at New Dover Road, as proposed, suggests the Council intends destruction of the countryside."
