GREENS IN FAVERSHAM ON CONSTITUTION

3rd May 2004

Green Party campaigners will be in Faversham town centre this Saturday from 12.00 noon asking people if they would vote in a referendum about the proposed European Union constitution. The Green Party has already decided that a referendum must be called on the Constitution, and welcomes the Government's decision to hold a referendum. Hazel Dawe, who teaches European Law and is East Kent Green Party's Campaign Officer, comments:

"People in Britain often believe that the European Union does not influence their lives. They tend to stay away from European Elections. There is a risk that a low vote in a referendum on the European Constitution will under-state the depth of concern people have about deeper European integration. Since the Green Party supports a looser European Union, with the abolition of the Common Agricultural Policy, the Common Fisheries Policy and a reduction in the economic powers of the European institutions, we feel we are close to the public mood about Europe. In a nutshell, we can be in the European Union but there is no need for it to have a wider range of powers over its member countries. A diverse European Union, now of 25 states, needs power devolved to countries and regions. In this way, political decision-making can be made less remote. This could encourage greater participation in elections and even in political parties. Three-quarters of the electorate not voting in the last European Elections in 1999, and only 59% of the electorate in the 2001 General Election, are signs of public disenchantment with the remoteness of decision-making in Britain."
