GREENS CONDEMN SAVAGE RACIST ATTACK29th April 2004Steve Dawe, the Green Party's Ashford South East by-election candidate, condemns the appalling racist attack on an Asian man which took place at 3.30pm on Thursday 22nd April at Victoria Road, Ashford, near the footbridge(1). He comments: "The attack, within the County division also being contested by a National Front candidate, is an appalling indication of what happens when racism is tolerated. The area in which this attack took place has been subjected to a flow of vile and dishonest anti-asylum seeker leaflets with the apparent intent of stirring up racial hatred. Do we want Ashford to acquire the same reputation as northern towns where racists have been elected on to the local council? We all use businesses which are owned and run by ethnic minorities: they are part of our community. "In a county, Kent, where even language students and foreign seamen in Dover have been assaulted by racists, we need our local media and businesses many depending upon international tourism - to unite in condemning this racist attack. We need this to be a consistent effort to marginalise racism and keep publicity for racist groups out of local media."
