GREENS CALL FOR DELAY IN HOUSEHOLD RECYCLING OVER XMAS

27th November 2003

Every year, our local recycling industry struggles with the levels of recycling generated over Xmas and through the January sales period. East Kent Green Party suggests people delay recycling at least some of their waste over this period and re-use materials to make recycling easier. Hazel Dawe comments:

"If we delay putting our recycling out for collection over the Xmas period, we make the job of our local recycling industries a lot easier. We also need to try and reduce the amount of extra rubbish we produce because of the Christmas season. We all waste far too much. Here are some tips:

"Make your own decorations! You can cheaply and easily make decorations from dough craft, evergreen prunings from your own garden or painted cardboard! If you do buy decorations, make sure they can be kept and re-used. Re-use glass for glass painting. Reuse is better than recycling.

"Unwanted gifts or other usable goods you do not need should be given to charity shops. Avoid the traffic jams by shopping locally or on the internet. You will spend less money on fuel, create less pollution and save your own frayed nerves! Get a reusable plastic Christmas tree - help save forests. If you feel you absolutely must have a real tree, take it to the household waste sites after Christmas and Kent County Council will shred and compost it. Christmas cards should be taken to a charity collection - or keep them for reuse next year yourself. And have a very Merry Green Christmas!"
