JUNCTION 10A CAN BE STOPPED, GREENS ARGUE

27th November 2003

Ashford Green Party has already suggested that an enhanced re-building of Junction 10, using public funds and not just money from developers, would avoid the creation of a deeply environmentally-destructive Junction 10A (1). Ashford Green Party is calling upon people to write to the councillors and MPs to say they do not want Junction 10A to be built. Hazel Dawe is calling for a broad campaign to resist the building of Junction 10A:

"Proposals to expand M20 Junction 10 are too under-funded to address long-term traffic congestion. The new Junction 10 scheme is solely funded by developers who are preparing for house-building at locations like Cheeseman's Green. Their £3 million for the new Junction will only provide enough extra capacity to accommodate increasing traffic for just 5 years, according to the Highways Agency. If we are to avoid the cost and environmental damage of a Junction 10A in just 5 years time, we need a more elaborate improvement of Junction 10 now. Ideally, we need some of the funds promised to Ashford by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to radically improve Junction 10.. We should favour a road bridge from the A292 directly to the A2070 between the existing pedestrian bridge and the current Junction 10. This would help to separate local traffic completely from through traffic and could help to avoid building a Junction 10A.

"But we should also favour traffic reduction strategies: 'car-free' developments; better cycle and walking routes; car-sharing schemes; a bus station for Ashford and a new rural transport partnership to enhance bus services." ENDS c265 words.
