East Kent Green Party represented at February 15th Peace Rally

15th February 2003

The East Kent Green Party was represented by many of its members at the largest demonstration in British history on Saturday 15th February. Government preparations for war in Iraq have succeeded in uniting the largest single peace demonstration in British history. Hazel Dawe, Campaigns Officer, comments:

"This is Tony Blair's Poll Tax. We have sent a very clear message to the Government. We do not want a new Cold War between a few western states and 2 billion Muslims. We do not want another war over oil, like the 1991 Gulf War. We want oil-hungry states like the USA to cut back oil use. We all need cuts in greenhouse gas emissions to prevent further climate change. We want answers to terrorism short of war against any state, and with no civilian casualties. If the Government proceeds to war, against public opinion, and against the wishes of many members of its own party, then how many more wars will this lead to?"

Geoff Meaden, Chair, comments:

"No one in Britain has ever seen a demonstration of this scale or diversity. The Government talks of 'regime change' in Iraq, but it is at Downing Street and in Westminster where 'regime change' is needed. The pursuit of peace in the Middle East and with Iraq will doubtless be difficult. But this effort must not occur at the price of adding to the lives already lost in this region since 1945.
