GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR WIND POWER WELCOMED

18th July 2003

East Kent Greens are delighted at the Government announcement of £6 billion for wind-power development around the UK(1). Greens hope that this will lead to more wind power proposals for East Kent, particularly offshore, to add to the Kentish Flats proposal already agreed off Whitstable. Shepway District Council meets on the 22nd July to consider its view of the Little Cheyne Court Wind Farm on Romney Marsh, a project Greens strongly support. Hazel Dawe comments:

"First Richborough, then Kentish Flats and soon Romney Marsh will all have wind power sites. Given East Kent's rising population, and the imminent closure of the Dungeness A nuclear station, importing electricity from France can only be avoided if further wind power projects are agreed. Since the UK has 40% of Europe's wind resources, we should be aiming to expand wind and solar power to meet most of our energy needs (2). Since the Government believes its proposals will generate 20,000 jobs, it is clear a stronger commitment to phasing out fossil fuels and nuclear power could create thousands more useful jobs. The only real question is why they have not emphasised the development of wind power before, given the UK's advantageous wind regime."
