COUNCIL RECYCLING PROGRESS TOWARDS REDUCING WASTE19th June 2003Canterbury Greens are delighted to here that Canterbury City Council has reached 24% of refuse being recycled. This is twice the national average and is a real achievement, creating more employment in this expanding industry. The real challenge, however, is to get to continental levels of recycling and to match the highest level achieved in this country in Wye, between Canterbury and Ashford of over 70% recycling and re-use. Geoff Meaden comments: "Canterbury City Council's progress on recycling is exemplary. Recycling at twice the national average also reflects considerable public support for recycling, which is heartening. But we have a long way to go to create the useful employment in the way other European countries have. Typical recycling rates for other EU countries are over 50%. This is partly because local government has more resources in many countries and can invest for the future in new recycling facilities. "But we also have the Wye standard to meet. Over 70% recycling of paper, cardboard, organic material, cooking oil, even meat bones make Wye in Kent the most effective community for recycling in the country. Also, Wyecycle employs 4 full timers and 2 part-timers, and provides a "Green Room" for reusable items to be donated and sold to the public at very low prices. If Canterbury City Council could reach Wye's level of recycling, it would inevitably create more local jobs."
