GREENS CALL UPON LOCAL COUNCILS TO STAGE GM DEBATES19th June 2003The Government is conducting a GM debate with public meetings but none of them are in Kent or Eastern England. East Kent Green Party has called upon district councils in East Kent to have special meetings of their committees dealing with the Environment. The public should be permitted to speak about GMs to their councillors, for reporting to the Government. Steve Dawe comments: "We should have the right to comment and participate in public debates without having to go to Taunton or Birmingham. GM crops are likely to be planted in Kent and our organic farmers and growers are concerned about contamination by GM crops. We encourage the public also to have a say over whether the government should allow the commercial planting of genetically modified crops in UK. You can register your opinions via the website: www.gmpublicdebate.org, or phone 020 7261 8528 for a paper form. Employment in Kent's large rural community is much more likely to be enhanced by organic farming than the chemical-assisted monoculture favoured by the pro-GM lobby."
