REGIONAL WASTE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY: "WASTE TO JOBS"

7th May 2003

East Kent Greens are calling for the South East Region to give a lead to the rest of the country on waste reduction, re-use and recycling. The South East Regional Assembly (SEERA) is consulting on its rather pessimistic No Time To Waste regional waste management strategy (1). (Comments, by 23rd June 2003, to Assembly Secretariat, SEERA, Berkeley House, Cross Lanes, Guildford GU1 1UN.) Steve Dawe comments:

"The approach of the SEERA document is too dismissive about the capacity of people to reduce waste, re-use and recycle. By doing this, up to 50,000 jobs can be created nationwide (2). The community of Wye near Ashford is producing about 250kg of waste per person compared to the national average of about a tonne per person, thanks to public support and the superior recycling provided by Wyecycle. This means a recycling rate in excess of 70% compared with a Kent county average of 15%.

"We do not want to blight the landscape with more landfill sites or worse still incinerators. Both these type of development encourage massive vehicle movements which contribute significantly to air pollution, as well as direct pollution in the local area of each site. We do want to provide more employment in waste management in each district council area. We can convert waste into jobs if the County Council and local authorities show leadership."
