CANTERBURY COLLEGE, NEW DEADLINE 24th January 20038th January 2003Objections are needed to resist a second attempt by Canterbury College and Canterbury City Council to build a new College campus on a Greenfield site, by 24th January 2003. This would damage the landscape setting of Canterbury in the Council-designated Area of High Landscape Value. Grade 1 &2 farmland will be lost if the development goes ahead. After the failure of the first Inquiry, due to a faulty environmental assessment, a 2nd public inquiry into the Canterbury College Greenfield campus proposals is to be held, probably in June-July 2003. The new public inquiry will examine the following topics: a) the need for all the accommodation and facilities to be provided on a single site; b) the extent to which the accommodation and facilities could be provided by total or partial re-development of the existing site; c) the availability and suitability of alternative sites nearer the city centre; d) the effect of the development on local traffic conditions; e) the practicality and enforcement of the Green Travel Plan, and f) the conditions which should be attached to any consent, with particular reference to the extent to which the development should be restricted within the parameters of the matters assessed in the Environmental Statement and other environmental information. Submissions (4 copies) should be sent to Debbie Smith at the Planning Inspectorate with the reference: APP/J2210/V/00/1000159, at: The Planning Inspectorate, Room 3/17, Temple Quay House, 2, The Square, Temple Quay, Bristol BS1 6PN OR debbie.smith@planning-inspectorate.gsi.gov.uk" ENDS c251 words FURTHER INFORMATION: Steve Dawe, East Kent Press Officer, on 01233 645167 or 07904 382203 OR Dr Geoff Meaden on 01227 456806 or 01227 767700 x2327.
