RECORD NUMBER OF GREEN COUNCILLORS IN ENGLAND

May 2003

More gains in more places expected next year bodes well for next year's Euro-elections.

After gaining twelve seats in last night's local elections, the Green Party now has 53 councillors on English primary authorities - the party's highest total ever - making breakthroughs in key cities like Manchester and York, and reinforcing Green strongholds in Bradford, Brighton, Lancaster and Norwich.

Darren Johnson, Leader of the Green Group on the London Assembly and the party's Principal Speaker, said "We started election night with 41 councillors in 23 principal authorities. We now hold a Green record of 53 councillors on a record 26 councils."

Robin Harper, Green MSP, said: "The English results are very heartening. In Scotland we are delighted with six seats in the Parliament, and a possible seventh to follow.

"This is an excellent result in England and Scotland, tinged with a little disappointment for our colleagues in Wales. But they ran their strongest ever campaign, doubled their vote and put Wales Green Party/Plaid Werdd Cymru firmly on the map."

Vanessa Hall, who made the party's breakthrough in Manchester, added: "Many of these gains are in places where we expect to do well in next year's European elections. This is extremely good news." For further information please contact the Green Party Press Office on 0207 561 0282
