JUNCTION 10 PLANS: "TOO CHEAP", SAY GREENS6th April 2003Proposals to expand M20 Junction 10 are too under-funded to address long-term traffic congestion. Spending too little now will lead to avoidable spending on a Junction 10A in the future. Steve Dawe comments: "I visited the Junction 10 exhibition at Centrepiece in Bank Street on 5th April. The new Junction 10 scheme is solely funded by developers who are engaged in house-building at locations like Cheeseman’s Green. Their £3 million for the new Junction will only provide enough extra capacity to accommodate increasing traffic for just 5 years, according to Highways Agency representatives. There is no provision in the scheme to reduce traffic on the A292 Hythe Road nor are the proposed cycling and walking provisions adequate. "If we are to avoid the cost and environmental damage of a Junction 10A in just 5 years time, we need a more imaginative and elaborate improvement of Junction 10 now. Ideally, we need some of the funds promised to Ashford by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to radically improve the proposed Junction 10 scheme. We should favour a bridge from the A292 directly to the A2070 between the existing pedestrian bridge and the current Junction 10. This would help to separate local traffic from through traffic and could help to avoid building a Junction 10A. "I am disappointed that the Council has not designated areas of new developments at Templar Barracks or Cheesemans Green as “car free". Canterbury and Edinburgh have done so, as a contribution to keeping traffic levels down."
