THE NUCLEAR DREAM IS OVER, GREENS SAY4th April 2003Attempts to promote the expansion of the nuclear industry in the local media in recent weeks ignore reality. The costs and safety of the nuclear industry have prevented the commissioning of a new nuclear station in Britain since Sizewell B in the early 1980s. Future population expansion in Ashford and Shepway can be served by other energy alternatives. Steve Dawe comments: "Nuclear power is not 'clean.' The mining of radioactive uranium ore is highly dangerous to uranium miners. Nuclear waste is radioactive and deadly for 250,000 years. Ordinary operation of nuclear stations involves some discharge of radioactive emissions into our environment, before accidents are considered. "The Wind Farm planned for Romney Marsh requires little labour to run. All nuclear stations employ large numbers of people which contributes significantly to costs. The Wind Farm will meet the electricity needs of Shepway residents with no nuclear waste and very little greenhouse gas emissions caused by vehicles attending the site. Since nuclear stations take 5-7 years to build and employ far more staff on a 24 hour basis, the sites concerned contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions from the transport people use to access the site. "Jeremy Leggett, chair of Solar Century, has indicated that replacing each conventional roof in this country with modern solar roof tiles would generate more electricity than we use today. This, combined with improved insulation standards, would generate employment for years to come, without the immense subsidies the nuclear industry requires to keep it going."
