COLLEGE COULD MOVE TO KINGSMEAD7th January 2003Canterbury Greens believe a solution to the Canterbury College location problem is possible, by moving the College to Kingsmead. Land to the east of Kingsmead Road, currently designated by the City Council for leisure, could be wholly or partially re-assigned to education. Geoff Meaden comments: "Most objectors to the Canterbury College greenfield campus proposals favour re-development of the existing College site. This would retain the town centre access advantages which would be lost by moving to the southern fringe of Canterbury. However, the large area of land at Kingsmead currently under debate by the Council for new leisure development proposals, could be allocated to education by the Council. The site has green space suitable for the College's sporting requirements, is well-situated for bus routes and Canterbury West rail station and has less need of height restrictions than the proposed greenfield campus. "If the College accepts the split site approach, then development on this site could be part of the College rather than its entire facilities. South Kent College and Thanet College both operate from multiple sites. Canterbury District Green Party is still concerned that the College does not have teaching facilities in Whitstable and Herne Bay. Greens call upon people living on the coast to object to the College moving even further away from them. The Kingsmead option offers a way to make the College highly accessible to the coastal towns, but they still need College sites to meet their needs.
